BACKGROUND

Vehicular accident is the unintended collision of one motor vehicle with another, a stationary object or person resulting in injuries, death and or loss of properties.  Vehicular accidents in Ghana have become one of the growing concerns to most Ghanaians in recent times. This is as a result of the tremendous negative effects on human lives, properties and the environment as well as the economy at large. Worldwide, it was estimated that 1.2million people were killed and 50 million more were injured in  motor vehicle collisions in 2004. Also, in 2010 alone, 1.23million people were killed due to traffic collision. In Ghana, a total of 19,530 vehicles were involved in accident with 13,372 people sustaining injuries. In 2014, in Ghana, 2,249 people died as a result of vehicular accidents with 14,181 others injured. It involved 21,817 vehicles comprising of 10,587 commercial vehicles 8,790 private vehicles, Elsevier(2008).In St. Dominic Hospital in the Eastern Region, 92 cases were recorded in 2013, 39 in 2014.(Statistics Office, St.Dominic’s Hospital 2016).
